I was up and about at 6 am this morning. I immediately took a couple of Ibuprofen and walked around to limber up my ankle. The swelling had gone way down overnight, and it felt much better. Still a bit twingey but workable. After taking care of my morning necessities, I strapped the support on my ankle, dressed, and headed downstairs to see what was for breakfast. No surprise, it was toast, coffee, and orange juice. Mary, Jane, and I ate our fill and then headed out. They caught a ride back to their stopping point the night before and I set off from the hotel. Everyone is headed to Santiago today. Our final push of the journey. It was a cool morning, and I had to put on a windbreaker for the first time for a couple of hours.
The trail ran next to the highway for a bit, then headed off into the woods. The man and daughter team from Holland soon caught up with me. His daughter is the same age as my granddaughter Savanna was when we walked the
French way. The trail went through beautiful woods that looked like they belonged in a Robin Hood movie. Every so often it would pop out of the woods onto a quiet street then back into the woods again. I could feel my ankle, but it was holding up well. I guess the long hard day of uphill climbing did it in the day before yesterday. I just needed to rest it. I took lots of pictures throughout the morning. When I reached the edge of the city of Santiago, Mary and Jane caught up with me and we walked together into the plaza in front of the cathedral. Even though I have done it multiple times, it always feels like I have accomplished something special each time that I do it. I hung out with Mary and Jane while they got their first Compostela. Afterward, we made plans to meet back in the plaza for a farewell dinner together then headed for our hotels. My room is very nice and modern and even has air conditioning. This is the first place that I have stayed at over here that does.
The three of us met at the plaza and had a great dinner at a nearby street cafe. After enjoying our last meal together, they headed to the cathedral to go to the evening pilgrim's mass. Those two were a joy to hang with and I will miss them. I walked around the familiar streets a bit before heading back to my room to update this blog and upload my photos to YouTube.
So that pretty much wraps up my English Camino. Tomorrow I am going to make my way down to the ocean at Finisterre and Muxia until it is time to meet my daughter back here in Santiago so we can walk from Sarria to Santiago. I hope everyone enjoyed following along for this leg of my journey. Stay tuned, there is more to come. Here is a link to the photos that I took today:
Until next time, Buen Camino everyone!
